Beginning in the early 1980s in urban Jamaica, reggae dancehall music arose out of a reaction to the dominance of roots reggae. Initially, it was defined by deejays toasting to reggae riddims, soon evolving into a distinct combination of electronic sounds, rhythmic beats, and frequently explicit lyrics. The genre experienced further transformation
